ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN PAC FORMES IN PUGET SOUND REGION
Aim to increase number of Asian Pacific Americans appointed to public office
BELLEVUE, WA – On Saturday, March 29, 2008, the Northwest Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans (NWCAPA) political action committee will host a launch reception, celebrating a new step in engaging Asian Pacific Americans in pubic activism. NWCAPA supports federal candidates who promote the appointment of Asian Pacific Americans to public office in federal office. The reception will be held at Bellevue City Hall beginning at 4:00pm.
“By offering a collective voice for Asian Pacific Americans, we help increase diversity and representation throughout all branches of government,” said Albert Shen, NWCAPA board of directors president. “This is a great opportunity to solidify the voice of Asian Pacific Americans and engage more APAs in the political process.”
NWCAPA supports candidates who are committed to appointing Asian Pacific Americans to policy-making and judicial positions, with a primary focus of securing appointments in the Pacific Northwest region. As a nonpartisan political action committee, NWCAPA believes that there are common shared values that cut across ethnic and socioeconomic lines and that it is important these values are represented in all areas of government.
Said state representative Sharon Tomiko Santos, “I am excited to see the Asian Pacific American community come together to play a greater role in ensuring they are represented at all levels of government.”
In the past two decades, the Asian Pacific American populations of King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties have grown at substantially. APA’s currently account for 14% of the King County population and 7% of the Snohomish and Pierce County populations.
